The current Meredith Library building was donated by Benjamin M. Smith in the memory of his parents: John Smith and Mary Mudgett Smith. Smith wrote of the time he spent in the town of Meredith:
"In memory of the years I lived so pleasantly there I have thought for some years I would like to do something for the people of West Center Harbor and Meredith and have spoken to some of the leading men of Meredith about erecting...a public library building in the memory of my parents."
- B.M. Smith, in a letter to Meredith selectman in 1899, quoted in Filling the Void: History of the Meredith Public Library by Rudy VanVeghten
It seems the Meredith Public Library was built on the happy memories of the town of Meredith and erected to create many more for many years.
